The A Level Biology (9700) course is divided into five papers content:
Paper | Content | Time assessment |
1 | Multiple Choice (Theory) | 1 hour 15 minutes |
2 | AS Level Structured Questions | 1 hour 15 minutes |
3 | Advanced Practical Skills | 2 hours |
4 | A Level Structured Questions | 2 hours |
5 | Planning, Analysis & Evaluation | 1 hour 15 minutes |
Route 1 (Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3) – AS Level Only
Students take Paper 1 (Multiple Choice), Paper 2 (Structured Questions), and Paper 3 (Practical Skills) within the same exam series. This route leads to the AS Level qualification, suitable for those who wish to complete only the first year of the course or use it as a foundation for further study at A Level.
Route 2 (Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 in Year 1, and Paper 4, Paper 5 in Year 2) – A Level (Staged Over Two Years)
In this staged approach, students sit for the AS components (Papers 1–3) in the first year and complete the A Level qualification in the second year with Paper 4 (Structured Questions – A Level content) and Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis & Evaluation). This route allows learners to gradually deepen their understanding of biological principles and scientific methodologies.
Route 3 (Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3, Paper 4, and Paper 5 in the Same Exam Series) – Full A Level in One Year
For students choosing to complete the entire A Level Biology course in a single exam session, all five papers are taken together. This option is best suited to students who are well-prepared for an intensive learning schedule and are confident in covering both AS and A Level materials comprehensively.
This exam structure supports diverse student needs, whether aiming for foundational biological knowledge, preparing for biomedical or environmental sciences, or pursuing advanced studies in medicine, biotechnology, or life sciences.
